From discussions with Angelo (during VESPA UX meeting), try this

• Each product is a granule (shape files, rasters, pdf docs)
• All elements related to a given map (eg: a particular region of Mercury) share the same obs_id
• Elements of same type from different maps have the same granule_gid (eg: all shape files) keep these id simple and explicit
• pdf docs here are considered dataproducts dedicated to a human interface, which is a bit special (different from other services). If this does not work, you can associate them to the corresponding shape file via datalink
